Gesturing toward a stack of artfully folded signed jerseys, Demling says she used to wear these rare treasures to games but stopped after 1) a beloved Sean Avery got stained — “and I can’t wash them because they’re all signed, I don’t want stuff that’s not signed!” and 2) she decided that they are perhaps not the most flattering garments in the world. “When I go a game, I want to look cute, so I wear a tee!”
To that end, cute-making team T-shirts, many unique and vintage, are draped over the back of an ecru sofa; instead of andirons, three signed sneakers reside in the fireplace — worn by Carmelo Anthony (gray), Dwyane Wade (red) and LeBron James (navy); on the mantel, among other objects, is a bottle of Big Papi hot sauce and a Kevin Youkilis signed baseball. The first thing Demling sees when she wakes in the morning is a photograph of the Celtics after they won the NBA championship in 2008 (it was gift from the photographer Mark Seliger); if she gets up for a cup of tea in the middle of the night, she passes a Lucite frame containing a white Speedo cap signed by Michael Phelps. (It looks a little like a giant rubbery amoeba under glass, but never mind.
