Our best Christmas present: being together
The hardest Christmas was 1972. That was the year my father died and left my mother a widow with six kids. "Your Pa is dead," my Gramma said when they got home from the hospital. I was 12.
Dad was one of those Irish guys who grew up between the West Side and Oak Park. He could tell a joke or a story. On hot nights, he would sit on the front stoop in his boxer shorts, smoking and drinking beer with the neighborhood men.
Early on the coldest snowy mornings, he would drag himself from bed and drive me around on my paper route. He would smoke and listen to the radio in our black 1960 Mercury, the heat on full, while I ran in and out delivering the Tribune and Sun Times.
He had nicknames for each of us kids: Alfonso, Mickelberry, Tom the Bomb, Dolly, Roberto. I, the youngest, was Mr. Magoo.
He ate and drank and smoked to excess. He ate like there was no tomorrow. His specialty was making a mess in the kitchen on Sunday afternoon, baking a ham with brown sugar, cloves, pineapple from a can and generous cups of cheap Port wine. When he made ice cream for us, it was three, four, five big scoops.
