A man accused of shooting two people in a van inside a Hoople, N.D., warehouse Thanksgiving morning has been charged with a second count of attempted murder.
Jason Alan Mize, 30, of Hoople, was initially charged with one count of attempted murder for shooting Thomas Scott Denault, 43, of Park River, N.D., and one count of attempted manslaughter for shooting recklessly and hitting Sierra Dawn Hobbs, 19, of Crystal, N.D.
But the second charge was amended Dec. 22 to attempted murder “to conform with the facts and investigation in the case,” according to Walsh County State’s Attorney Barbara Whelan.
A few days prior, on Dec. 20, Mize asked the court for a new attorney because he doesn’t think his court-appointed attorney is good enough.
More recently, on Jan. 2, Mize asked the court for help recovering personal items from his ex-girlfriend Hobbs, including a “rare” ring inscribed in Elvish, a language created by Lord of the Rings novelist J.R.R. Tolkien.
