KABUL, Afghanistan - Besides going after a medal in the boxing ring at the London Olympics, Sadaf Rahimi will be taking a few punches in the fight for equal rights for Afghan women.
There are female Afghan success stories, yet most women in Afghanistan remain second-class citizens, many cloaked from head-to-toe in blue burqas, some abused or hidden in their homes.
Rahimi, a determined 17-year-old student, wants to become the new face of Afghan women, gaining honor and dignity for herself and other women in here war-torn country and improving their image worldwide.
She will get her chance this summer in London, where women's boxing makes its Olympic debut.

"When we participate in the outside competitions, there is pressure on us," Rahimi said while training in a makeshift gym in the Afghan capital. "But I will try to show that an Afghan girl can enter the ring and achieve a position for Afghanistan.
WENATCHEE, Wash. - Up until the last few decades it was considered indecent for women to box. This year, women's boxing will make its Olympic debut in the Summer Games of London. The contenders for the first-ever U.S. Olympic women's boxing team face off in Spokane February 13 - 19. It's a big development on the international stage. But the face of boxing has already been changing in small clubs across the Northwest.

This make-shift gym has brick walls, no heating, and a roped-off boxing ring in the center. It would look straight out of the 1960s, if it weren't for three of the regulars:

Devon Burgess moves quickly, almost dancing around the boxing ring, ducking and swaying, dodging back and plunging forward. At 23, Burgess is the number one-ranked heavyweight division fighter in USA Boxing’s Pacific Northwest Region. The Naval Aircrewman Operator 3rd Class with Maritime Patrol Squadron (VP) 40 on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., later this month to fight for the national title. If successful there, he has a chance at his dream – the Olympic Trials.
“I have two dreams,” Burgess said last week during practice with the Whidbey Island Boxing Club. “To fly for my country and to fight for my country. I get to fly for my country through my job. But I also hope to fight for my country at the Olympics.”
