Six weeks has gone by since our New Year's Resolution making for 2012. Some of us are firm in our resolve to lose weight and get in shape before the hot North Carolina summer arrives, and with it, sparkling swimming pools, white sand beaches and the dreaded bikini. We women struggle with this far more than men and, as part of our diet plans, usually take desserts completely off the table; a calorie laden indulgence sure to sabotage our weight loss effort. But does it? The just released results of a new research study by the University of Tel Avi v, have determined that a balanced 600 calorie breakfast, including desserts, can help dieters actually lose more weight and keep it off.  

This 200 person, 32 week study included non-diabetic women and men who were randomly put into two separate groups. Women were given a diet containing 1400 calories per day. The first group was given a low carbohydrate diet, including a 300 calorie breakfast. The second group was given a 600 calorie breakfast that was high in both protiens and carbohydrates and always included a dessert, usually a chocolate one.

Have you ever eaten something so good it stopped you in your tracks? When I was at the Fancy Food Show earlier this year I tasted one of the most incredible things in the world. It was Kari’s South African Tea Cake from Kari’s Desserts.

This recipe I later discovered was passed down through the generations. Kari Mansfeld, the founder, like so many other female entrepreneurs in the gourmet food industry was working in retail when she decided to realize her passion.

Kari was encouraged to start a business to sell the desserts she made for her friends and family at dinner parties.

She “fell” into the gourmet food industry just out of passion for baking. I had never seen anything like what she made, and was absolutely enamored with the desserts I tried. Women like Kari who take a big risk by leaving steady corporate jobs to pursue their passion are my heroes. She answered some questions for me at the Fancy Food Show. Check out our interview below....
