Dear Vicki: I have been sewing for years, but I feel uncertain about knits. Just trying to shorten knit shirts has been a disaster. I know they are much faster to make, and I would like some tips and recommendations so I can make some gifts or just something for myself. Do I need to have a serger? And if I don't have one, how can I finish the edges of the seams?

Dear Penny: You can love knits. First choose knits with good "memory," that means, pull on the cut edge and see if it springs back to the pre-stretched shape.

I am recommending that you start with Kwik Sew 2900. This is a very nice knit shirt pattern with natural shoulders, so it has a trimmer, more flattering look than dropped-shoulder looks. Now trace off the size that comes closest to your upper bust and then measure your bust, and if you are very large, cut the next size body under the arm in front and front edge of the sleeves.
