A group of about five people is believed responsible for stuffing hundreds of pieces of Ku Klux Klan literature into merchandise at Rapid City stores in October.
Three stores – Walmart, Scheels and Best Buy – notified the Rapid City Police Department that white supremacy cards declaring South Dakota as “Klan country” were slipped into items already on their shelves and racks, according to Tarah Heupel, community relations specialist with the police department. A number of other stores in town were apparently targeted by the group as well, according to local managers from Scheels and Best Buy.
“Since that time, a couple weeks ago, there haven’t been any further incidents,” Heupel said.
The two-sided card offers greetings from an unnamed member of the “Klu Klux Klan realm of South Dakota” on one side and the other quotes a part of the KKK’s statement of purpose and lists a pro-KKK website.
On one evening in October, loss prevention officers at Scheels in Rushmore Crossing noticed a group of men acting suspiciously in the store, according to Zac Soetmelk, an assistant leader with the store. The store’s officers searched them, found the cards and asked them to leave but not before they had hidden about 100 of the cards in items around the store, Sotmelk said.
