Fremont woman collects nativities

Edna Bergquist enjoys a stable environment.

The Fremont woman's holiday décor stars 42 nativity sets.

Formerly of Uehling, Bergquist brought her nativity collection to Nye Square this year.

"I didn't think I'd have room," she said.

But her collection just grew with another ornament from her daughter, Jean Bohling of Hooper.

She displays larger ones throughout her home while smaller sets decorate her Christmas tree.

Many are ceramic or wood; some use candles or electric lights. Snow globe nativities round out the assortment.

Bergquist has a special attraction to a magnetic set given to her by her youngest son, Tom. Others are unusual, she said. Like the Vietnamese crocheted crèche she received as a gift. Even one where baby Jesus is an older child.

No stranger to the manger scene, Bergquist bought the first one in 1950. Since then, she has received dozens as gifts of gratitude.

"When I do something for someone, maybe they get one (for me)," Bergquist said.
