Most people wince at the thought of giving people socks and underwear, but these are surely the wardrobe items that need to be replaced most often.
And no, I'm not advocating wrapping up an economy bag of Fruit of the Loom tighty whiteys, but there are options. Boxers offer an upgrade in underwear for men with options that aren't just fun but sensible - think comfort, support, even shaping. And the typical bra, panty or lingerie gifts are so uber-sexy that they are more fantasy and fetish than everyday, but there's a happy medium that's a realistic upgrade in day-to-day underwear yet still worth unveiling.
As for socks, you don't have to opt for the zaniest kaleidoscope print you can find, even a subtle design with a splash of color can be an upgrade for a strict white-and-black-socks type of guy.
For women a shopping trip for a striking pair of tights or stockings can be a welcome addition to their wardrobe. My favorite legwear to splurge on is Wolford brand stockings and tights in patterns that range from exotic snake figures wrapping around the leg to diamonds and bows ($52-$82 at Nordstrom). But plenty of interesting legwear options exist in lower price ranges.
