This is the time of year to be writing about, thinking about and drinking that splash of springtime that comes each year at the beginning of the cold season: Beaujolais Nouveau.
November is the time, to be specific, but when it’s November and you can stand in the driveway in a T-shirt throwing the ball for the dog at six in the morning and think it’s warm out, the Beaujolais has to sit on the shelf for a week or two.
The low temps of the past few days, though, allow me to bring it out.
Beaujolais, as you know, is at the southern tip of the Burgundy region of western France, south of the Cote de Nuits, south of the Cote de Beaune, south of Maconnais ans, way,way south of Chablis. This very southern point is the home of Beaujolais Nouveau, the red wine made for early (meaning right now) drinking, and these days Noveau accounts for about half of the Beaujolais grapes that are turned into wine.
