AS the driving force behind Calvin Party, John Donaldson has never been afraid of being his own man.
The band’s songs, which were a favourite of the late John Peel, mixed politically aware lyrics with challenging melodies.
Now with Calvin Party a thing of the past, Donaldson is back in the guise of JD Meatyard with a new album and a new outlook.
“This is very much a solo project, a much more stripped back approach,” said John, who grew up in Darwen after his family moved to the area from Glasgow.
“In a sense these are songs that I have always wanted to write.
“When you write for a band you have to add so much more but with these songs I feel I can remain closer to what I want to say.”
John, who has been based in Holland for a number of years, will be showcasing the songs from his new album at an intimate gig at The Belgrave Bar in Darwen.
“I’m coming back to see family and friends and thought I’d get a few gigs sorted at the same time,” he said.
