As an inveterate hunter for interesting flea market vinyl, Josh Rosenthal possesses an eye for interesting but forgotten albums. When he stumbled upon a sadly abused copy of Calvin Keys' "Shawn-Neeq" last year in New York City, he was vaguely familiar with the Oakland guitarist but eager to own his first copy of an album on Black Jazz, a long defunct indie label that released several dozen LPs in the 1970s now prized by hard-core collectors.

Upon giving the 1971 record a spin, Rosenthal fell in love with it, the first by Keys under his own name. "The cover was messed up, but the vinyl was in good shape," says Rosenthal, who recently moved from New York to San Francisco. "When I put it on, I just fell in love with Calvin's sound. It's a beautiful record, very funky, and he's really a master."

Fortunately, Rosenthal was ideally placed to act on his discovery, as the owner and guiding spirit of Tompkins Square Records, a label dedicated to long neglected artists and recordings. Any doubts he had about pursuing "Shawn-Neeq" promptly evaporated with an eerily well-timed email.
